An Introduction to New Quizzes

Bruin Learn An Introduction to New Quizzes

What is New Quizzes?

New Quizzes is the second-generation quiz engine and assessment tool. Canvas' original quiz engine, now referred to as Classic Quizzes, is being maintained but is no longer in active development. Both New Quizzes and Classic Quizzes are available to instructors in Bruin Learn.

What are the benefits of New Quizzes?

New Quizzes offers feature enhancements, new item types, and workflow improvements for instructors.

New & enhanced question types

New Quizzes retains all question types from Classic, and adds four new types:

  1. Categorization
  2. Hot Spot
  3. Ordering
  4. Stimulus

Learn more about question types in New Quizzes.

Shareable question banks

"Item Banks" are the New Quizzes equivalent of "Question Banks" from Classic Quizzes.

Item Banks are linked to your user account so you can access them in any course you teach. Item Banks can also be shared with anyone using Bruin Learn. Learn more about Item Banks.

Timed accommodations for each student

Time accommodations can be set to be the same for an individual student across all New Quizzes within a course. Learn how to add CAE Accommodations in New Quizzes.

More question types can be regraded

Previously, only 3 question types (Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer, and True or False) could be regraded in Classic Quizzes. In New Quizzes, most question types can be regraded, except for Essay and File Upload.

Simplified user experience for building and managing quizzes

The 'Build' tool, or quiz builder, centralizes the functions for creating questions, reviewing and moderating submissions, adding accommodations, and viewing reports.
