Learn: Points
Total vs. Question Points
In New Quizzes, instructors can set both total points, as well as points for individual questions.
Total points for a score are set in the quiz details. This number is also reflected in the gradebook:
Additionally, each question has a setting for points:
While each question can be worth various points, they are calculated against the total points that you set in the quiz details/settings.
For example, let's say you have a quiz that has 10 questions, with each question worth 1 point, and you've set the total points for the quiz to 5 points, overall. Given this, someone who gets 7 out of 10 questions correctly will get a score of 70%, which equates to 3.5 points.
Changing Total Points
Currently, if you change the total points of your New Quizzes quiz, any students who have already submitted the quiz will need to have their grades re-adjusted.
For example, say you changed your total quiz points from five (5) to ten (10). Students who previously took the test and gotten all questions correct (i.e. received 5 out of 5), will now show that they have gotten a total of 5 out of 10 points, bringing their grade down from 100% to 50%.
Once the total points of a quiz has changed, instructors must go to each submission and update it so that the grades are back in alignment. Instructions:
- Add any value into the Fudge Points field
- Click Update
- Refresh browser
- Remove the fudge points
- Click Update, again
- The grade on the grading sidebar will update to reflect according to the correct percentage.
This must be done for all students who have already submitted the quiz prior to the score being changed. To avoid this, please make sure to check the total points of the quiz in the Quiz Details before you make it available to students.
