Accommodations vs. Moderate settings

The Moderate settings page provides a lot of information to the instructor, including: a list of students in the course, links to each quiz attempt, the student’s score, attempt logs, quiz accommodations, and the moderate button.

In this module, we will focus mostly on the Accommodations and Moderate options.

Accommodations

To access the Accommodation settings, click on the pencil icon under the Accommodations heading.

In New Quizzes, the Accommodations setting provides instructors 3 options to give additional time or remove the time limitation on exams.

  • Give additional time: Instructors can specify extra time in hours and/or minutes for individual students.
  • Remove time limit (unlimited): This option removes any time limitation set for the quiz.
  • Time limit multiplier: Instructors can multiply a new time limit based on the existing time limit for the quiz. This is useful for accommodations like time and a half. For example, if a quiz has a 30-minute time limit, applying a time-and-a-half multiplier will give the student 45 minutes to complete the quiz.

When instructors use the Accommodations setting, the accommodations are carried over to all the other New Quizzes in the course. This is important to note as this setting can be a huge time saver for faculty who need to provide students accommodations on all quizzes.

Moderate settings

As we noted above, when instructors use the Accommodations setting to provide students extra time accommodation quizzes, these settings are copied to all other New Quizzes in the course.

Conversely, the Moderate setting will only apply to the quiz where the setting is applied. Instructors can use the moderate setting to provide extra time and attempts for individual students.

To access the Moderate setting, click on the Moderate button.

Another feature of the Moderate option is the ability instructors have to reopen a student’s most recent quiz attempt. When reopening a quiz for a student, a warning message will display to inform you that the student can resume the quiz where they left off. This is a handy feature as sometimes students may run into technical issues while taking a quiz. The option to reopen the quiz for a student will allow the student to continue to where they left off in the quiz.

When would I use one setting over the other?

The accommodation settings affect all New Quizzes in the course. When you provide time accommodations for individual students, those accommodations are saved on all New Quizzes in the course.

The Moderate setting in New Quizzes applies to one quiz at a time, so if you provide accommodations like extra time or additional attempts for a student, they will only be specific to that quiz. To grant the same accommodations in other quizzes, you must reapply the settings separately for each quiz.

The Moderate setting also has the option to Reopen a quiz for a student for a particular quiz.
