Inclusive Access

This course is part of the UCLA Inclusive Access program. Your course materials are being automatically provided to you, digitally, through the course website before the first day of class or upon enrollment. The materials are being provided at a reduced and competitive price. You will receive e-mail from the UCLA Store (UCLA Store
<no-reply>@verbasoftware.com ) with program details and cost sent directly to your email address on file with the Registrar. It is your responsibility to read all communication coming from the bookstore.  Check your spam folder if not received.

Everyone enrolled in this course is automatically a participant to start and will have access to the materials through 2nd week of class. Those remaining in the program after 2nd week will be billed for the materials directly to their BruinBill account and will continue to have accesses to the course materials. If you do not wish to participate in Inclusive Access, you must opt-out by the Friday of 2nd week deadline or you will be billed. Those who opt-out will lose access to the digital materials starting week 3 and will be responsible for obtaining the materials on their own (see section below "If you opt out").

Do not pay for your materials through the publisher website unless you are opting out of Inclusive Access. All Inclusive Access course materials will be billed to your BruinBill account.

Required materials

The required textbook : Probability for Data Scientists, Juana Sanchez, Cognella, 2020. We will cover all chapters in this book, but selected sections and problems will be specifically posted in each week's module. Studying the assigned reading each week before watching the lectures and doing the practice problems will help you learn the material. Take your own notes and summarize, create a short cheat sheet of what you read.
Required Integrated Cognella Active Learning materials' via providing Cognella with the key associated with your inclusive access textbook . These are created and curated by Dr. Sanchez. These are problems and exercises from the textbook, with detailed discussion of the solutions prepared by Dr. Sanchez. Required for practice exercises for each lecture with feedback and for high stakes assessments. Active Learning materials are accessed from inside Bruinlearn, as Dr. Sanchez opens them progressively each week. Access them from the links provided in each week's module pages. Test your access first, via the test page in the "Course Overview Module." You must access active learning activities before the deadlines in order to have access to them for review for exams later.

Please keep in mind that our institution is strict about copyright law and course materials should never be copied or duplicated in any manner.

Note that if you transfer from another Stat 100A course taught by Dr. Sanchez the link to Cognella obtained for that class will not work for the new course. You will need a code associated with the new class.

You all received an email from the UCLA textbook store. The email contains your individual and nontransferable access code to Cognella Active Learning ebook plus Active Learning courseware upon enrolling in the course. Those materials are required for the course. The email from the textbook store has something like this in it, after a brief introduction to inclusive learning:

Find that email received from the textbook store and get your access code. If you can not find the email sent to you, contact inclusive access inclusiveaccess@asucla.ucla.edu You need the access code that they sent you.
Once you have your access code, follow the instructions. Redeem it at the publisher's web site: https://store.cognella.com/codes/redeem
If you have problems redeeming your code at the publisher's side (after you obtained the code from the textbook store's email) contact orders@cognella.com or call 858-552-1120 x503.

Once all of the above is done, look at the left hand side navigation bar in this course web site. Look for the UCLA Store Course Materials link. Click on it. If you can see the book it means you you have successfully redeemed your code at Cognella. The book is accessible. But you also need to access the Active Learning materials, needed throughout the course. Read the next point for that.
Now test your access to active learning by doing this Cognella Active Learning quiz: "test your access to Cognella." You will do many more like this throughout the course for credit. To reward you for trying early, you will get some participation points for this as well.

If you opt out of inclusive access.

If you opt out of inclusive access, you still need to purchase active learning materials. So you would need to purchase them on your own (if you opt out of inclusive access) in Cognella's online student store, which is: https://store.cognella.com/95983 using the email associated with your Canvas login, typically ending in .edu. The publisher's web site will list two items for Stats 100A(2). Read carefully the web site to get what you prefer. The active learning materials are free when you purchase the textbook, but may be purchased separately on their own. It is recommended that you do not use old books, from 2019 and early 2020, as early printouts had a few typos.

The UCLA Science and Engineering Library in Boelter's 8th floor has hard copies of the textbook on reserve, but not the active learning materials.

NOTE: If you opt out of inclusive access, and do not purchase the course materials from the publisher, do not use versions of the book that were sold in 2019 and early 2020. They had some first printing serious typographical errors. Similarly, the library's copies should not be binded in notebook format. If they are, they are those older copies, and you should return them and request the new ones.

Accessing the Required Cognella Active Learning Materials

We use the textbook and Active Learning materials intensively throughout the course. Both combined, they are the best resource to help your self-study and learning of the course material. Readings from the textbook and active learning assigned review materials should be done before doing the high stakes quizzes and the exams.
Once you have access, through inclusive access, or from your own purchase at the publisher's, the activities will be found in each week's module, as the professor opens them. You must access them before the deadlines in order to be able to have access to them after the deadline. If you do not open before the deadline, they will not be available to you for review later.

After reading all the instructions in this page, and after accessing the materials, you may test that you have access by doing the short quiz in the "Course Overview Module," page "Test your access to Cognella's Active Learning Materials." After that, the Cognella Active Learning activities will be opening gradually throughout the course.

Other textbooks in our library

There are other textbooks that cover the same concepts we learn in this course at the level of undergraduate learning. You may want to consult them if you need additional examples to practice. Their notation is like ours, although their style is different. Some of them might be accessible via our library (using VPN) if you are not on campus.

Ross, S. A first course in Probability. Pearson, 2014. (in permanent reserve at the science and Engineering library by some other course).

Note: keep in mind, that not all textbooks have the same goal. Probability can be studied as a branch of mathematics without having any use for it in mind. That is not the case in our course.
