Prepare a Course Site
Verify Course Availability
Course sites or "shells" are provided for the following term in advance of several weeks. Instructors can begin prepping their course(s) in Bruin Learn once notified of course site availability.
Pro Tip: In the All Courses list, choose what courses appear on the Dashboard by clicking on the star next to the course title, which will make it a favorite.
If instructors cannot find a course they expect to see, please email bruinlearn-support@it.ucla.edu.
Three Ways to Get Started
There are several ways instructors can begin posting content to a course site. Here are three common scenarios and recommendations to start:
- Instructors who previously used CCLE/Moodle can Use a Migrated Course
- Instructors with their design approach in mind can Start from Scratch
- Instructors who prefer guidelines to get started can Use a Pre-Designed Template

USE A MIGRATED COURSE
Instructors may use a migrated (from CCLE) course in Bruin Learn (located in "Unpublished Courses") as a base to modify slightly to run in the next quarter.
First, copy the migrated course into the newly created course shell. From there, do some basic modifications and updating -- change due dates, review links and assignments, make a new welcome page or video.
See Migrated Courses for more information.
START FROM SCRATCH
Start from scratch in Bruin Learn by posting content in the course shell.
The course shell is linked to MyUCLA, and instructors can build a course directly in it. Create modules, add content, assignments, quizzes, set due dates, upload videos, and a syllabus.
See Add & Organize Content to get started.
USE A PRE-DESIGNED TEMPLATE
Download a template from Canvas Commons and add it to your course shell, and add your content in the appropriate places within the structure provided.
See Bruin Learn Course Templates for more information.
Ready to Publish?

Students cannot see unpublished course materials. When instructors are ready to publish a course, navigate to the Course Home Page sidebar, and click on the Publish button.
A message will confirm the course was published.
