Privacy Best Practices for Non-Curricular Sites
Introduction/Purpose
In some setting configurations, students can see other student information across course sections. Course sections in Bruin Learn are used to segment the people in a class, typically based on their TA or meeting times. Classes with discussion sections or labs in the Schedule of Classes will automatically have corresponding Bruin Learn sections.
Course Settings
If you are using Sections in a course that is not Student Information Systems (SIS) provisioned, the Hide sections on the People Page from students option in the course settings page should be enabled.
To do so, do the following:
- Select a Course
- Click on Settings
- Click on the More options link under the "Description" field and check the Hide sections on the People Page from students checkbox option
NOTE: If the course does not currently have more than one section, this feature will not be available. In addition, with only one section, the section identifier will still be present in the course. However, if/when a new section is added, this feature will need to be enabled.
When updated, the People Tab will resemble the format below:

Cross-listing Manually
When there is more than one section in a course, or if you are manually cross listing non-SIS sites, in addition to updating the sections area above, the instructor ought to Limit this user to only see fellow section users in their site.
This can be accessed by doing the following:
- Click on People
- Click on Student
- Click on Memberships
- Click on the Limit this user to only see fellow section users link
Manually Adding Users
When adding users manually through the UI based on the How do I add a user to my course site in Bruin Learn? Links to an external site.KB, make sure to check the Can Interact with users in their section only checkbox to confirm the FERPA restriction and then process the enrollments:
TA Sites and Credit Bearing Course Sites
By default, the course/enrollment settings that protect FERPA privacy, will be enabled. However, if there is a user that is manually added to a course, the guidelines above to limit user to interacting with their section only should be considered and enabled accordingly.
