Accessibility Checker & Ally Tool
Accessibility Checker
Bruin Learn has a built-in Accessibility Checker that flags errors for remediation.
We can only see the Accessibility Checker when we’re editing a Canvas page. So when we navigate to a page and select the button with a pencil icon that says “Edit” at the top right, you’ll see the Accessibility Checker icon at the bottom of the editing box.
This is the symbol of a stick figure with its arms outstretched, which will indicate the number of accessibility errors inside a red circle.
In this example, we have one error, which, once we select, will provide an explanation and tips for remedying it.
Some common errors include: long-winded or missing alt text, insufficient contrast between text color and background color, and skipped heading levels.
Once we've addressed all accessibility issues flagged by the checker, we'll get this message indicating that no issues were detected.
Ally Tool
Bruin Learn now includes small dial symbols below our uploaded documents and images.
A green dial indicates a high accessibility score, while a red dial means the document or image is not accessible.
Click the dial to see how you can improve accessibility.
If you're still unsure after reading the explanation for remediation, contact UCLA's Disabilities and Computing Program.

The Ally Tool also allows users to convert course materials into alternative formats -- OCRed versions Links to an external site. of scanned text, audio files to listen to readings, braille formats, and more.
Consider demonstrating these options for students early in the quarter.
