Scanning and Skimming Strategies
Scanning involves moving your eyes quickly down the page identifying specific words and phrases to either find a particular answer or grasping the basic main idea. When using this technique, make sure to look for items such as lists, points, graphs, indexes and subheadings. Identify these key items before getting into details.
Skimming will focus on understanding the main idea and concept. You won’t read everything. You read only what is important to you. Just read the first and last paragraph of an article.Read the first and last sentence of each paragraph, if confused. The first one or two sentences will teach you the main points.
Tip: Previewing is all about answering these five ‘W’ questions: Who, Where, What, When, Why. Who relates to people involved. Where relates to the location. What refers to the general idea/topic. When is about the time of an event. Why refers to reasons, analysis. Write down all key facts to remember them later.
